Little Sisters of Christ (LSC)

Our Foundation

The Little Sisters of Christ (LSC) was founded on August 15, 1975, by Sister Nirmala Mary Pananthanam, lovingly known as Little Sister Nirmala (1939–2022), at Pallathuruthy in the Archdiocese of Changanacherry, Syro-Malabar Church.

The congregation was established with the paternal blessing of Mar Antony Padiyara, then Archbishop of Changanacherry, and is deeply inspired by the spirituality of Saint Charles de Foucauld.

Our Vision

Imitating the hidden life of Christ in Nazareth as a poor carpenter, the Little Sisters of Christ have chosen the path of Gospel proclamation through daily living.

Each of our houses is known as the “Family of Nazareth” or “Nazreth Bhavanam.”
These small fraternities, usually consisting of three or four sisters, are modeled after the Holy Family of Nazareth—Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.

Our fraternities are families of silent prayer, where each Little Sister draws strength from contemplation and enters into ministry rooted deeply in prayer.

Our Mission

Our mission is to live a life of holiness through simplicity, obedience, and love, spreading the Gospel not merely through words, but through prayer, action, and a dedicated lifestyle.

Values & Goal

Rooted in the spirit of Nazareth, we follow the example of Jesus through these core values:

  • Prayer: A life rooted in constant communion with God
  • Love: Loving God and neighbour in every action
  • Service: Humble service to all, especially the poor and marginalized
  • Hard Work: Faithful diligence in daily responsibilities
  • Obedience: Trustful surrender to God’s will
  • Simplicity & Poverty: Living in dependence on Divine Providence

Our Patron

Saint Charles de Foucauld (1858–1916)

Saint Charles de Foucauld was born in Strasbourg, France, on September 15, 1858. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by his grandfather and showed great intelligence and love for learning. However, he later drifted away from the Catholic faith and joined the French army.

After leaving the army, Charles undertook a scientific exploration of Morocco in 1883, disguising himself as a Jew with the help of a Jewish rabbi. His encounters with people of different faiths deeply touched him, leading to his rediscovery of Catholic faith in 1886.

At the age of 28, he dedicated his life to God and sought a religious life. He joined the Trappist monastery in France and later in Akbes, Syria. After leaving monastic life in 1897, he lived and worked as a gardener and sacristan for the Poor Clare nuns in Nazareth and Jerusalem.

Ordained a priest in 1901, he dreamt of founding a religious community that welcomed people of all faiths. Though he lived a quiet and solitary life, he remained faithful to prayer, humility, and service.
In 1905, he settled in Tamanrasset, where he lived until his martyrdom on December 1, 1916, during World War I. Though he died without followers, his spirituality later inspired numerous religious families and fraternities across the world. The Little Sisters of Christ, founded in Pallathuruthy in 1975, carry forward his Nazareth spirituality.

Our Foundress

Little Sister Nirmala Mary (1939–2022)

Sister Nirmala Mary Pananthanam, affectionately known as Little Sister Nirmala, was born on September 28, 1939, in Nellimattom, within the Archdiocese of Ernakulam, Kerala. Her parents, P.M. Mathai and Anna, were devout Christians who nurtured her faith.

She was a former member of the Little Sisters of Jesus (LSJ) Congregation, which follows the charism of Saint Charles de Foucauld. She made her first profession on September 8, 1960, in Tri-Fontane, Rome, and her final profession on October 1, 1966.

After spending nearly two decades in France, Sister Nirmala returned to Kerala with a vision to establish a congregation inspired by Nazareth spirituality, while embracing Indian culture, environment, and way of life.

Her life was marked by simplicity, humility, love for the poor, and deep Eucharistic contemplation.
In 1983, she and a few sisters went on to establish another community, the Little Sisters of Jesus Christ (LSJC), in the Eluru Diocese of Andhra Pradesh.

She peacefully passed away on May 12, 2022, leaving behind a lasting spiritual legacy.
